The 1830 US Census shows a Stephen Hagenbuch living in Towamensing Township, Northampton County (now Carbon County), PA. He is between 20-29 and married with a daughter. His father is likely John Hagenbuch (b. 1776) who lived nearby in East Penn Township that year.
Stephen does not appear in John’s will and is not found on the census of 1840. It is therefore believed that he died between 1830 and 1840. His existence as a son of John is confirmed by the History of Carbon County which states that Stephen Hagenbuch owned a general store with his brother-in-law Thomas Craig.1 It is known that Thomas Craig married John Hagenbuch’s daughter, Catherine Hagenbuch.
