Lewis Knepper, 94 year old Weatherly, R 2 resident and holder of Weatherly’s Golden Cane, awarded to the community’s oldest male resident, died yesterday afternoon in the Hazleton State General Hospital. He had been a patient 39 days. He was born in Albany Township, Berks County, a son of the late Amandus and Susanna Everett Knepper, and lived in Weatherly for the past 58 years. He was a farmer until his retirement 12 years ago. Mr. Knepper received the Golden Cane from former mayor Irvin D. Neiffert on July 16,1965, and was the 22nd person in the history of Weatherly to receive the cane. Years ago he served as a deacon of Salem Reformed Church, now Salem UCC and was one of the men who carried the stones when the present church structure was erected. His wife, the former Pearl Richie, a native of Columbia Co. died two years ago. He is survived by eight children; Leland, Philadelphia; Mrs. Joseph, Ethel Pavone, Coopersburg; Mrs. Carl, Lillian Evans, and Lawrence, Weatherly R2; Mrs. Mervin, Pearl Schmeer, Weatherly; Mrs. Fred, Eleanor Ray, and Willard Weatherly R2 and Arden, Weatherly. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral 10 am Saturday. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Weatherly.
