Gertrude K. “Trudy” Fitzgerald, 90, of Mendota died Nov. 2, 2014, in the Mendota Lutheran Home. Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Holy Cross Church, Mendota with the Rev. Bo Schmitt officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation is 11 a.m. - noon Wednesday at Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. She was born Jan. 26, 1924, in Sublette to Henry J. and Sadie M. (Schamberger) Roemmich. She married Donald E. Fitzgerald on Feb. 15, 1947 in Arlington. She was a member of Holy Cross Church. Her first job was at Conkey’s in Mendota during World War II working on the “can line.” After starting her family, she was a homemaker, who also worked part-time as a waitress at the Hi-Way Café and the Octave restaurant in downtown Mendota. She later worked and retired from Wayside Press in Mendota. Her greatest joy came from her grandchildren. She enjoyed attending their school programs and sport activities. She loved music and playing the piano. She is survived by one daughter, Linda (Thomas) Weber of Peru; three sons, Gary (Janet) Fitzgerald of Shorewood, Daniel (Nancy) Fitzgerald of Oglesby, and David (JoAnn) Fitzgerald of Mendota; eight grandchildren, Lindsay, Kevin (fiancé Heather), Dana and Meg Fitzgerald, Kathleen (Trenton) Fitzgerald-Ellis, Jeff (Cindi) and Jim (Jennifer) Weber and Toby (Jackie) Fitzgerald; three stepgrandchildren, Shelly Bell, Joni (Brian) Zinke, and Julie (Brian) McConville; and four great-grandchildren; Jaelyn and Jonas Fitzgerald, and Bradyn and Logan Weber. She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 29, 1959; three brothers, Robert in infancy, Wilson and Ralph Roemmich; three sisters, Esther Zimmerlein, Florence Daehler and Lillian Monson. Memorials may be directed to Holy Cross School.
