Originally Susan (Susanna) was thought to be the second wife of John Hagenbuch (b. 1785). However, the 1850 shows that his first wife, Phillipina (Phoebe) was still alive then and living near her children. Susan also appears, a widow, living near several of her children who have been placed in other homes.
It is thought that this Susan may be the wife of Joseph Hagenbuch (which one exactly isn’t for sure). A Joseph Hagenbuch appears in Columbia County in 1830 who is 30-39 years old. Joseph appears in 1840, but is not there in 1850. In that year, Susan is by herself but near household names that were close to Joseph in 1830 and 1840. This helps link her to him.
There are Hagenbuch children nearby in other households, which are suspected to be her children including Amanda, Abraham, Sarah, Anna, and Rebecca. William C. Hagenbuch is likely her grandchild.1
Susan’s dates come from her stone in Creveling Cemetery.2
