Stephen’s age was around 35 in 1864 when he reenlisted. He served aboard the USS Ozark during the Civil War. He enlisted in Cincinnati. His reenlistment in 1864 says he was born in Northampton County, PA, tying him to the Henry’s (b. 1737) or Christian’s (b. 1747) lines.
Using the above and census records, he is believed to have been born around 1828.
Stephen’s parents are calculated by looking at the 1830 census and determining which Hagenbuch families had a child in the 0-4 age column that is unaccounted for. Henry Hagenbuch II (b. 1786) is the likely father as a result. Rumors have persisted for decades that a Henry Hagenbuch had a son Stephen. This was thought to be Henry (b. 1737). However, it appears to have actually been his son Henry (b. 1785).
1850 census shows Stephen “Hagenbach” living in Springfield, Clark, Ohio. He is a carpenter and age 26.
Stephen married Rose Anna (written as Rosanna) Hilbert, March 5, 1858. Their first son was named Joseph. Along with a few other children, they had a son named Stephen Henry who died young.
1860 census shows Stephen “Hagenbaugh” living in Urbana Township, Ohio. His is a carpenter age 33. His wife Rose A. Hagenbaugh is on the next page with another family, age 27.
